Welcome to the Business Studies Department

Economics

The department offers contrasting but equally rewarding courses at key stage 4 and 5.  At key stage 4 we offer the modern, hands on GCSE Applied Business, with emphasis on research and use of computers; whereas at key stage 5 we offer the traditionally academic and respected A Level in Economics. However, from September 2016 we are moving to A Level Business Studies.  We feel this will suit our students' needs more closely, represent more continuity between key stages, and complement the new Welsh Baccalaureate.

The department co-ordinates various industry events throughout the key stages, and various entrepreneurs visit business classes.  The department is also responsible for the Enterprise Challenge in key stage 4 and 5 for the Welsh Baccalaureate and Skills Challenge Wales Certificate.

Key Stage 4

Would you like to set up your own business and be a successful entrepreneur like Alan Sugar or Levis Roots?

Would you like to be a manager for a large business like John Lewis or M&S?

Have you got an interest in the news and how the government and their policies affect your life?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions then Applied Business is the GCSE for you!

You will cover a range of topics in relation to both small businesses and large businesses including how to start a small business, the different type of business organisations, finance, marketing, ICT, communication, and external influences, including the environment and business cycle.

As an Applied course, the focus is on practical work, with the controlled assessment work allowing the pupils to research and write reports on a business of their choice.  Every pupil has access to an individual computer in lessons.  The exam covers the finance section only, with focus on business documents, financial accounts and analysis of accounts.

Assessment

Unit 1 – The Business and its Environment           Controlled Assessment (60%)
Unit 2 – Business Finance & Decision Making       Exam (40%)

We are a successful department, 2015 was a record breaking year for us with 93% A*-C grades including 46% A*/A grades.

Key Stage 5

No matter what your vocation, you will encounter the world of business. Having the ability to engage in business activity with confidence will set you apart from the crowd. This qualification will allow you to gain a holistic understanding of business in a range of contexts, whilst developing a passion for the subject. Business integrates well with other subjects and gives you the opportunity to progress your skills in decision-making, problem solving and critical analysis using numerical and non-numerical sources.
