Art education is fundamental to an individual’s perception and understanding of the world in which we live. Our proven and stimulating art program develops core skills, encourages visual awareness and is central to intellectual and creative growth. We are totally committed to developing the understanding, investigating and making skills of all pupils in terms of visual communication.

As a department, alongside the core curriculum, we are proud to offer a broad range of workshops and extra-curricular activities, designed to enhance the learning of all students. Pupil progress and attainment are excellent at all levels, demonstrated in our year on year success. In 2015, 91% of our students achieved A* to C and 39% achieved A*/A grades at GCSE.

Our department aims are:

  • Learn methods of research and develop ways of analysing the work of other artists, craft workers and designers, to enrich their work through, inquiry, comparison and evaluation.
  • Explore the diverse working practices of artists, craft workers and designers from different periods, places and cultures, considering their purpose and intentions.
  • Communicate how and where art is central to the world of work and the opportunities this can provide.
  • Evaluate their own work, methods and results of their investigating, modifying and refining their work through discussion, reading, writing and reflection.
  • Develop their skills of recording from observation, experience, memory and imagination.
  • Cultivate their abilities for investigating the natural and man-made environment and also the world of imagination in a variety of media.
  • Explore and organise a range of reference materials and resources to establish and develop ideas and themes.
  • Keep a sketchbook to address different aspects of investigating to develop ideas and feelings. Exploring and experimenting with materials and processes. Initiating and supporting independent work.
  • Discover and experiment with and apply the visual, tactile and sensory language of art, craft and design.
