Bryntirion Comprehensive School - Further Update

We would like to provide an update in reference to the incident that occurred at Bryntirion on Friday 31st January. We wrote to all parents on Wednesday 5th February and included such information that we are permitted to share. Our intention then was to try to reassure parents that this incident was isolated and quickly contained.

We fully understand the frustration when matters such as this are not shared publicly or immediately. Our decisions are often dictated by rules around the sharing of such information. We are obliged to secure the integrity of any subsequent investigations and we are governed by the need to maintain confidentiality in such matters (particularly when related to UK GDPR). However, we cannot account for decisions of others to post recordings on social media. Sharing this type of content may breach data protection and safeguarding laws designed to protect children.

The police have confirmed that the priority of the school was (and remains) the safeguarding of those involved and all pupils within the school. They have stated that this has been addressed by the swift action taken by the school and that, at the time of the incident, there were no wider concerns requiring further intervention.

We have discussed this matter with the local authority and the Director of Education, Lindsay Harvey, has confirmed that the ‘school and the local authority have acted appropriately in respect of this incident, and the specific risk being referenced here has been mitigated effectively.’

We hope this will provide at least some assurance to you.

Whilst we are unable to provide any detail relating to any disciplinary action, we can fully assure you that appropriate measures have been taken, and we take the safety and security of staff and pupils extremely seriously.

We appreciate your patience as we work alongside the relevant authorities in determining, and then following, the most appropriate action.
