Cymraeg 2050
Introduction
In the Minister's foreword of 'Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh Speakers,' a resolute commitment to fostering the growth and vitality of the Welsh language is clearly articulated. The minister expresses that the Welsh language is a treasure of Wales, integral to our identity as individuals and as a nation. The Welsh Government's ambitious goal is to have one million people proficient in Welsh by 2050. While acknowledging the challenge, they believe it is a worthwhile and necessary pursuit to ensure the language's vitality for future generations.
The Welsh language in Bridgend
In 2022, about 29.5% of people aged three or older in Wales could speak Welsh, totalling around 900,600 individuals. Bridgend County Borough ranks 21st out of 22 local authorities in Wales for Welsh speakers, with only 17.5% (24,100 people) documented in 2020. However, this marks a 3.1% increase from 2005. The county aims to have 21% of residents aged 3 and over speaking Welsh by 2050, a target set by the Welsh Government.
Our School Vision
In support of Cymraeg 2050, our vision here at Bryntirion is that Cymraeg is visible and audible in all areas of the school, and staff and pupils are seen and heard using the language in all aspects of school life. Staff and pupils understand the importance of preserving Cymraeg; there is a sense of camaraderie and team spirit in working towards this mutual goal; and staff and pupils endeavour to seek/recognise opportunities to promote Cymraeg and Welsh culture. There is respect and recognition of the language’s contribution to the culture, society, and economy of Wales and among those who do not speak any Cymraeg, or lack confidence, there is goodwill and a sense of ownership towards the language.
